Software Wiki
Hi there Ose!
Welcome to our wiki, and thank you for your contributions! There's a lot to do around here, so I hope you'll stay with us and make many more improvements.
  • Recent changes is a great first stop, because you can see what pages other people have been editing, and where you can help. "My Home" also lets you get an overview of activity lately.
  • Questions? You can ask at the Help desk or on the "discussion" page associated with each article, or post a message on my talk page!

I'm really happy to have you here, and look forward to working with you!

Charitwo (talk) 16:48, January 2, 2010 (UTC)
Oh, sorry. I forgot about the super-complex-amazing-code. Mind if I make separate image categories, in that case? Ajraddatz Talk 21:41, January 21, 2010 (UTC)

Main page links[]

Hi, Ose! Someone pointed me to this wiki today to check out the cool stuff you're doing. I'm really impressed with the Create button in the sidebar -- that's really interesting!

The tabs on the main page are also very interesting, but I wanted to let you know about a potential downside to that structure. I've been working a lot on helping our wikis get higher placement in Google results. We get most of our new visitors from Google searches, so it's good to think about ways to make the site come up higher in teh results.

One technique that we've been using is to limit the number of links on the main page -- Google's webmaster guidelines recommend not having more than 100 links on a page. For a given article page, I think it's fine to have more links than that where it's appropriate, but the main page is the place where Google's bot starts. I've worked with a bunch of wikis to reduce the number of links on the main page, and seen really good results.

Right now, Software Wiki's main page has 330 links on it. The directory is really cool and useful, but it's also creating a page that the Google bot will have a hard time navigating.

So -- obviously, what you do with that information is up to you. I wanted you to be aware of the potential impact on Google, and then you guys can decide if that's important enough to change how you're setting up the page.

Sorry to be a drag about it. :) This is a great project. Let me know if I can help with anything! -- Danny (talk) 20:44, February 10, 2010 (UTC)

Runs on section[]

Hi Ose, I was just wondering for the runs on section, some programs from Windows work fine using Wine, should they be added? --Lcawte 17:35, February 26, 2010 (UTC)

Nah. If people want to toy with Wine, they can see that it's a windows program and figure out the rest on their own. Osetc 17:50, February 26, 2010 (UTC)

Weird note...[]

You have close to 1337 edits. OpenBSDWiki 19:17, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Not anymore :P Osetc 19:20, April 11, 2010 (UTC)

Still interested in w:c:blogindex?[]

Just reminding. Plan to make a new page soon. OpenBSDWiki 21:18, May 13, 2010 (UTC)

Ad free[]

Hi! Would you like this wiki to be ad-free? I'm looking for wikis to be part of a new program which would remove all ads from the wiki for $19.95/month.

If you are interested, please be visit here to sign up. Let me know if you have any questions! - sannse (help forum | blog) 21:01, June 3, 2010 (UTC)

Programmer's Wiki[]

Just making sure you get notification of this. =) Forum:Programmer's Wiki --Jesdisciple (talk) 13:29, June 12, 2010 (UTC)

I got done with the Programmer's Wiki's Template:code, and now I'm thinking about copying it to a few of the other code wikis. Any suggestions before I do? --Jesdisciple (talk) 12:37, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
You have 369 articles, link to some of them. Osetc 19:11, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
The sad thing is that I can't think of a single article that's intriguing. Most are encyclopedic because for a while everyone except the founder had the wrong idea for the wiki, and I intend to convert all that to a glossary by clobbering the articles with redirects. But I'll give it a shot... If you have any specific ideas for which article(s), I'm all ears. Will be thumbing through them in a bit. --Jesdisciple (talk) 20:24, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

New shipment of titles[]

See here. If ideas for what to add are what you need, those might be nutritious munchies (if you don't have duplicates of most the titles). --Jesdisciple (talk) 08:29, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Also see here for lots of open-source articles and a new contributor. --Jesdisciple (talk) 20:25, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Time for the Wikia frontpage![]

Now there is a time to be on the Wikia front page! I posted an initial comment here, please add to it! OpenBSDWiki 01:12, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

Dunno if I should be doing the talking, since i'm kind of involved with Wikia (or something like that). We don't want people screaming "cabal". Anyone is free to apply on behalf of the wiki though, so please go ahead if you'd like. I can investigate further tomorrow, right now I need to sleep, since I need to get up in five hours :P Osetc 01:28, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
I gave my best shot, but only addressed the main page's features because I don't know the site very well. --Jesdisciple (talk) 02:07, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
Cool (I can't sleep :( ). Osetc 02:15, June 16, 2010 (UTC)
=( You should look for something really boring to read... like maybe an archive of laws or some manpages. Should have you yawning in no time. --Jesdisciple (talk) 03:00, June 16, 2010 (UTC)

operating system articles to import into Software Wiki[] will become the German Edition of Software Wikia but there are still remaining articles from the EncyclOSpedia project of 2008: It could be imported into the English software wiki and then removed there. Matthias 13:02, June 22, 2010 (UTC)

done, I think. Osetc 17:50, June 22, 2010 (UTC)

German Edition[] is now live, maybe you could link us on the frontpage. Matthias 16:19, June 25, 2010 (UTC)

help with semantics[]

I also added semantic functions to the German version of this wiki, but I don't know how to allow more then one entry in the Infobox Software. As in de:SciDAVis it runs on "Linux, Mac OS X, Windows", but the extensions says that this combination is not in the list, even though individually they are allowed values. Matthias 16:41, July 1, 2010 (UTC)

See what I did here. Arraymap docs are on mw:Extension:Semantic Forms. Osetc 16:48, July 1, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Matthias 18:40, July 1, 2010 (UTC)

I like the Software Wiki start page, but I have problems immitating it. de:Vorlage:Zufallsbox and de:Vorlage:Galerie just won't work as they should :/ Matthias 20:22, July 21, 2010 (UTC)

What exactly is wrong with the zufallsbox? Osetc 22:53, July 21, 2010 (UTC)
It does not show screenshots and it's not random, it's always the Inkscape entry. The gallery has layout problems and is also not automatic, but manually fed with image links. Matthias 13:28, July 22, 2010 (UTC)
I'm going on vacation so I don't have a lot of time to help unfortunately. You can ask for help with SMW on irc:// If you show them the template on this wiki, the one on your wiki, and tell them what's wrong with yours, they can probably help you. Osetc 21:15, July 23, 2010 (UTC)
I asked w:c:community:User talk:DaNASCAT and he sent me back to you. Matthias 13:37, August 13, 2010 (UTC)
You need to change your infobox for this to work properly. Put [[File:{{{Screenshot}}}]] in the template and then just use |Screenshot=something.png on the pages. And the same for the logos. Look at the infobox on this wiki and see how it's done. --Osetc 05:08, August 14, 2010 (UTC)

VoIP clients ("softphones")[]

Hey there. I just made another list of links to software someone might like to document: User:Jesdisciple/VoIP This is just the first wiki I'm aggregating links for after my personal research; I intend to update that page with links to the other corresponding three pages. --Jesdisciple (talk) 06:51, July 2, 2010 (UTC)

I Need to Be Unblocked[]

Hi, Ose. I know you off SporeWiki, and I assume you know Wormulon, a Sysop/Admin? Well, I was wondering if you could tell him to unblock me. I mean Wormulon blocked me because of 1 lie. And I think for 1 year. I really don't think that's fair at all.. I just want you to try and tell him to unblock Wackyy. I can thank you if you are able to get me unblocked through conversation. It's just my only Wiki I'm active on nowadays. Now if I'm not unblocked, I just have to leave.

Ok, funny, Ose. Can you unblock me completely? It's one of your responsibilities - to keep major wiki's running smoothly, and help new users. I actually need to make an important message to Creatureboy11, and that means you unblock me completely. Please.

Import Wikipedia Articles marked for Deletion[]

Here is a list of Software articles in Wikipedia marked for deletion. You could wikipedia:Special:Export them to Special:Import them here as this wiki has no notability rules it is a good safe haven for those entries. This is how most of the software articles in German Software Wiki are created. By the way: how did you attract contributors because completely lacks them. Matthias 10:59, August 7, 2010 (UTC)

Just an FYI I can import articles if I'm an admin. ΩpenBSDWiki 14:54, August 14, 2010 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons integration[]

You should ask at Special:Contact for Wikimedia Commons integration, so you don't have to reupload free software screenshots and icons. Matthias 12:02, August 20, 2010 (UTC)

Note to self[]

Make bot go over pages and change "open source=true" to "source model=open source", and change Property:Open source to Property:Source model. Also, rename Property:Founded to Property:First released? Osetc 22:06, September 9, 2010 (UTC)

Hey... Could you remind me what the IRC channel is named? --Jesdisciple (talk) 03:59, September 18, 2010 (UTC)

Mozilla Thunderbird Page[]

Do you know what is going on with the Mozilla Thunderbird Page because I can not edit it

Use the normal edit function instead of form edit. Osetc 10:12, September 20, 2010 (UTC)

Hi there Ose, I'm wondering how the create article input box was put into the side bar menu. If you could show me the code or explain how I could do that as well, that would be great. Thanks. Btw, I've heard about you from Jesdisciple; he says you're the one to ask for experienced code help or suggestions. User:SSgtGriffin 00:44, October 5, 2010 (UTC)

The code is in MediaWiki:Monaco.js. The monaco skin is going away though. Osetc 12:50, October 5, 2010 (UTC)
I know, I was just curious how that worked. Thanks. SSgtGriffin 02:33, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Multi bg music[]

I have 2 songs I want to use in the bg of my HTML document. Do you know how to make the second play after the first is finished? SSgtGriffin 00:56, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Background image[]

Thank you for your previous help. I have another question. In the new wikia look how does one change the background image? Like the binary code on this wiki. WifiShadow 02:19, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

Edit with form[]

How do you do the "Edit with form" WifiShadow 18:12, March 9, 2011 (UTC)

JS Help[]

Hey, if you could help me with some JavaScript questions that would be great.

Normally this:

function UserYouTubeBox() {
        $('#UserYouTubeBox').append('<iframe id="fr" src="" style="overflow: hidden; height: 105px; width: 300px; border: 0;" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" />');

would be placed in the wiki's JS page to create a YouTube widget box when <div id="UserYouTubeBox"></div> is written, since the iframe element is not supported.

I would like to have this code work for any YouTube user, like put it in a template. How would it work? How can I get <iframe id="fr" src="" to allow users to change it to their own username (ex. {{YouTubeBox|''<username>''}})??

Thanks, and I know my explanation is bad... SSgtGriffin 22:53, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Uhm, what about just
 $('#UserYouTubeBox').html('<iframe id="fr" src="" style="overflow: hidden; height: 105px; width: 300px; border: 0;" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" />');

I dunno really, my JS skills aren't that great. Osetc 20:07, March 9, 2011 (UTC)

I'm here. You asked for help about making this site successful!? But it will be, sooner or later – if you started this wikia last summer, then nothing is expected to happen for a while, except your own editing. I'm an interwiki wanderer based foremost on Wikipedia as User:Rursus where most of the information exists, but there are certain reasons why Wikipedia isn't very suitable for most of the existing software, foremost the policy of notability. There are three prerequisits to make the site successful:

  • Neat and usable pages, nice for the eye and easy to navigate,
  • A small stable club of two or more administrators, all trained in positivism and social competence (such as according to wikipedia's policies of WP:CIVILITY),
  • Instructions on how random editors should create their own articles about their favourite software,
  • Some rules borrowed from Wikipedia, and some other rules that describes how software wiki differs from Wikipedia,

I'm contactable at User talk:Rursus, speak your mind! rursus 12:02, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Just do it together, no one can finish their job alone...[]

Hi Ose,

I'm the Founder of Software Wiki, I saw you said you need help of this Wiki(I also need helps :D) Please forgive my rudness, but I think we can exchange our information of the software ourself and fill up our Wiki together...  After all, I'm alone... Thanks for listening me soliloquize. If you can help me, please e-mail to me.

P.S. My e-mail is :D

Hello. I'm TwoTailedFox. Myself and a few others have a project we'd like to discuss. It's come to our attention that Wikia's wikis focused on Gaming, Technology and Software have either outright failed, or are so unorganised that they are not fit for purpose anymore. Part of this problem is the fractured nature of Wikis. On Wikipedia, it's much, much simpler to link to articles when they share a common theme, and I feel we can do this at Wikia. We'd like to use as a main 'Hub' of Software articles, including software articles from,,,, and (assuming they all consent to a merge).--TwoTailedFox (My Talk Page) 13:42, July 25, 2013 (UTC)

Sounds interesting. Where are you coordinating this thing? On a talk page? IRC channel? I'll gladly let you use this wiki, it's not like it has any users or anything. Osetc 22:37, July 25, 2013 (UTC)

Did you request an editor?[]

Hi, I'm RayoOyar, one of the administrators of the Anno 2070 Wiki. I'm currently on vacation, but when I'm back I'd really like to help you (and this wiki)! Once I had plans to revive the Microsoft Wiki, but, well, reviving a wiki is quite difficult as you've probably experienced. When I read about the plans of TwoTailedFox, I thought: well, let's help, if you appreciate that. I'm quite experienced with (infobox) templates and stuff, if you need those.

Let's make something of these wikis! --RayoOyar (talk) 09:18, July 26, 2013 (UTC)
