MS-DOS 7.00

MS-DOS 7.00 shipped with Windows 95, and was the first version of MS-DOS to not be shipped as a Standalone Operating System. One major difference with MS-DOS 7 is that the MSDOS.SYS kernel is now integrated into IO.SYS, instead now using MSDOS.SYS as a plaintext configuration file. It is also the first version of DOS to have long file name support and to require at least a 386 processor. It also includes an updated and enhanced XCOPY, called XCOPY32. Oddly though, a regular XCOPY command is still included that merely redirects to XCOPY32.

As its primary purpose is to support Windows 95, certain MS-DOS tools, such as MemMaker, are no longer installed with it by default. You can still install these utilities by running INSTSUPP.BAT in Other\Oldmsdos on the Windows 95 install CD or by downloading the OLDDOS.EXE self extracting archive, formerly available on Microsoft's FTP servers. If you specify a path after INSTSUPP.BAT, when typed from the command line, you can install the utilities to a folder of your choice. Note that the RESTORE command will not work by default due to an bug. This can be resolved by typing the command "SETVER RESTORE.EXE 6.22". Also note the ASIC.COM, BASICA.COM, DISKCOMP.COM, EXTDISK.EXE, FASTOPEN.EXE, MODE_DOS.com, SCPLUS.EXE, SCSIC710.SYS, and VDISK.SYS are not included with Windows 95/MS-DOS 7.
